Hill's bicycles and tricycles were available to hire at the ground for 9d per hour "splendid surface and no traffic to bother you." The Hartlepool Northern Daily Mail on 20th May 1890, carried the following advertisement "Bicycle riding taught in one hour, on the bicycle grounds (entrance from the top of Thornton Street) by appointment at Hill's Bicycle Depot.
The Middlesbrough Daily Gazette carried an advert for the "Grand opening of the West Hartlepool Athletic Club's Bicycle track, Saturday April 5th and Easter Monday 1890." On Easter Monday there were 3 bicycle races
The first year of the ground were busy with meetings on 21st May, 1st June and 4th June. On 21st June there was a 10 miles match race for £5 a side between J Flanagan of Wallsend and W Taylor of West Hartlepool. Lottie Stanley** the champion American woman track rider was advertised to ride at West Hartlepool on September 27th 1890 in a three event contest against W Taylor of Hartlepool for £5 a-side. It was reported that she won one of the three races, but it unclear if these races took place.
Unfortunately meeting were less frequent in the second year of the ground. There was a one mile handicap race, organised by West Hartlepool AC, that was held on Wednesday 1st June 1892, with five competitors in three heats. This was followed by a six hour team contest on the 23rd July 1892 organised by the Hartlepool Social Cycling Club. The track was 4 laps to the mile and all competitors used pneumatics. This was the last race at Hill's track
Hill continued selling bicycles and changed the company name to Joseph Hill's Cycle Works. The ground was eventually developed for housing at the junction of St Paul's Road and Clifton Avenue.
** In September 1889 five of the star American women cyclists toured Britain for four months, the women were Louise Armaindo, Lottie Stanley, Jessie Woods, May Allen and Lillie Williams. Women racing on high bicycles was a novelty in England but fairly commonplace in America. The women returned to America in January 1890, except Lottie Stanley, who toured Britain by herself from May to October 1890 and appeared in exhibition and handicap races against men.
